Imagine having an emergency at your home or building, you call 911 and give the dispatcher all of your information, including your address. There is a key piece of your address missing though; there's no number on your building. How are emergency services supposed to know which building is yours?
On October 17, 2017 the Town of Minto passed a by-law to help Emergency Services enhance response times.
This by-law requires all buildings in the Town of Minto to affix an identification number or number plate that displays the designated number for the property.
These numbers shall be installed in the following manner:
Numbers shall be a minimum of 10cm in height
Numbers must be displayed in a visible and unobstructed location at least eight feet above ground at the front of the building
The number must be in numerical form not written
Where there are two or more dwelling or commercial units with separate entrances, the number shall be displayed at the front of the building and a unit number or letter for each unit shall be displayed next to the door of the unit.
Multi-unit apartment buildings or commercial buildings with apartments shall display a single address for the building and identify each apartment with either a number of letter
If the building is 30 metres (100 feet) or more from the road, or the building is obscured in any way, a number on a contrasting plate shall be attached to a post that is at least 1.5 metres and placed at the front of the property in a conspicuous and unobstructed location
Please remember, this by-law was put in place to provide a better level of emergency service to the residents of the Town of Minto. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact:
